Deputy calls on MP to prevent use of land as collateral to 'save' the BRB

Deputy Fábio Félix is seeking judicial intervention to stop the GDF from using public land as collateral for a loan to the Brasília bank.

Fábio Félix, a district deputy from the PSOL party, has approached the Public Ministry of the Federal District, requesting a court action to prevent the Government of the Federal District (GDF) from using public land as collateral for covering deficits at the Bank of Brasília (BRB). His move comes just a day after the Legislative Chamber approved a bill that permits the use of up to nine public properties for securing potential loans from the state bank. Among the listed properties is one owned by Terracap, referred to as 'Gleba A,' located in the environmentally protected area of Serrinha do Paranoá.

In his request, Félix highlights the ecological significance of the contested land, which is situated in a sensitive region of the Paranoá Lake basin and is home to various springs. He argues that the area plays a crucial role in ecological connectivity, supporting gene flow among fauna and flora, particularly rare, endemic, and threatened species. Félix stresses that the legislative approval for the land's alienation is problematic given its environmental importance. He aims to protect the field from being used as collateral, a move he believes risks ecological damage in a critical habitat.

The implications of this legal action could be significant for the GDF's financial strategies and the environmental policy in Brasília. If the court grants Félix's request, it may set a precedent for stricter regulations on the use of public land for financial purposes, especially in areas designated for environmental protection. The case reflects the ongoing tension between urban development, financial needs, and the preservation of essential ecological spaces in Brazil's capital.
