Will Europe Turn Away from iPhone and Android? New Smartphone from Nokia's Country
Jolla aims to create a new European smartphone to challenge the dominance of Apple and Android with its Jolla Phone, which has garnered significant preorders even before production begins.
In recent years, Europe has increasingly discussed the need for "technological sovereignty," yet it struggles to find readily available products that align with this vision. At the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, Finnish company Jolla debuted the Jolla Phone, marketed as a European alternative to smartphones from China, South Korea, and the United States. This device is positioned not just as a smartphone but as a platform intended to diminish the grip of iOS and Android over the market.
Jolla announced that it received 10,000 preorders within just three months, amounting to over 5 million euros in purchase commitments. The preorder phase is set to begin, even though production has yet to commence, indicating significant demand and interest in a device that is "Made in EU." They expect to start manufacturing the Jolla Phone in the second quarter of the year. Notably, the assembly will take place in Salō, Finland—historically home to Nokia factories—suggesting a narrative that seeks to rekindle European pride in local technology manufacturing.
The emergence of the Jolla Phone not only represents a potential shift in the European technology landscape but also invites broader discussions about the reliance on non-European tech giants. As Jolla strives to establish itself as a symbol of European technological independence, it could either pave the way for more local initiatives or face the reality of an established market dominated by larger players. The reception of the Jolla Phone will likely be a key indicator of Europe’s ability to create sustainable technological alternatives to iOS and Android.
