Every other girl asked for nude photos and receives pornographic messages

A youth conference in Hafnarfjörður addressed the alarming prevalence of sexual violence and coercion among teenagers, with many girls reporting unsolicited requests for nude images.

A recent youth conference hosted by Barnaheill in Hafnarfjörður highlighted the worrying issue of sexual violence and coercion within teenage relationships. Approximately 70 teenagers participated, expressing that such issues are alarmingly common among their peers. They called for immediate action to tackle this growing problem after discussing their experiences and perceptions of sexual violence among youths today.

One of the key findings shared during the conference was that the manifestations of this abuse are often more severe now than in the past, according to the project coordinator at Barnaheill. Statistics from the Icelandic Youth Research conducted last year revealed disturbing data, indicating that one in eight girls in the tenth grade reported experiences of non-consensual sexual intercourse or oral sex. Even among boys, 4% admitted to similar infractions, underlining the urgent need for societal and governmental intervention.

As nearly half of the tenth-grade girls reported unwanted sexual advances or pressures, the results of the research stress the critical need for prevention and education efforts to protect young people. The conference served as a platform for the youth to advocate for their rights and raise awareness about the pervasive issues surrounding sexual violence, emphasizing the responsibility of authorities to implement effective measures to combat these challenges.
