Most and Rinčić: Reconciliation, reshuffle or new elections in Rijeka?
Rijeka's mayor Iva Rinčić faces potential political instability following a loss of support from the Most party over disagreements regarding health education implementation.
In the upcoming 2025 local elections, Rijeka has witnessed significant changes, marking a notable shift from the long-standing rule of the SDP party with the rise of independent mayor Iva Rinčić. Her convincing electoral victory was bolstered by the formation of a governing majority, consisting not only of her own councilors but also two from the Most party and three from Marko Filipović’s list. However, recent statements from Rijeka’s Most members indicate that their unwavering support for Rinčić in the council is in jeopardy due to conflicts regarding the implementation of health education policies, suggesting that the coalition may be nearing its end.
Despite Mayor Rinčić attempting to downplay the situation by claiming that the majority is not at risk, the underlying reality showcases her limited room for maneuver in the long term. Without resolving tensions with the Most party, she may have to consider reshuffling her political alliances, searching for new partners in order to maintain her position. Failure to find a solution could lead to premature elections, highlighting the instability within Rijeka's political arena and raising questions about the future governance of the city amidst internal party conflicts.
