Procon notifies gas stations that raised gasoline prices in São Luís after the war in the Middle East

Procon in Maranhão has started notifying gas stations in São Luís for price hikes in gasoline following the crisis caused by the Middle Eastern conflict.

The Consumer Protection Institute of the State of Maranhão (Procon/MA) has begun to notify gas stations in São Luís that have reportedly increased the price of gasoline. This increase is purportedly linked to the ongoing conflict between Israel, Iran, and the United States. Consumers have reported a rise of up to R$ 0.15 per liter, prompting Procon/MA to investigate these price increases.

As part of its enforcement action, Procon/MA is requiring the gas stations that have increased prices to provide their three most recent invoices for fuel purchases. This strategy aims to determine whether the price surges have a legal basis or if they constitute abusive practices against consumers. The situation has garnered public attention, leading to formal proceedings for scrutiny of the price adjustments.

If any irregularities are found in the investigations, Procon/MA has stated that the implicated gas stations will face penalties. This situation highlights the ongoing challenges of price regulation in Brazil, particularly in times of geopolitical crises that affect commodity prices, raising questions about consumer rights and protections during economic fluctuations.
