The Ministry Cuts Funding for Parks and Meteorology. According to the Opposition, the Government is Acting Like Trump
The Czech government's recent budget cuts to the Ministry of the Environment have drawn harsh criticism from the opposition, who compare the measures to those of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
The Czech Ministry of the Environment, led by the Motorists' Party, announced significant budget cuts amounting to 36% for the current fiscal year. This drastic reduction slashes the ministry's operating budget from 7.7 billion Czech korunas in 2025 to only 4.9 billion korunas. These cuts are set to impact various organizations within the ministry, including national parks and the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ), raising concerns about the potential effects on environmental protection in the country.
Recent reports indicate that several national parks are set to receive significantly less funding, and there are directives for them to lay off staff as a direct result of the budget cuts. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute has also been affected, with plans to terminate 37 employees. Such actions have raised alarms among environmentalists and opposition parties who accuse the Motorists' party of dismantling the state's environmental safeguards, drawing potentially harmful comparisons to the environmental policies of Donald Trump.
Criticism of these budget cuts has been voiced fiercely by opposition leaders, including former Environment Minister Petr Hladík of the KDU-ČSL party, who has expressed that these measures are a dangerous pathway toward destroying public nature conservation efforts. This situation underscores a growing tension in Czech politics regarding environmental policies and funding, crucial for protecting the country's natural resources amid pressing climate issues.
