U.S. Submarine Sinks Iranian Warship – Expert: Major Loss for Iran

A U.S. submarine sank the Iranian warship IRIS Dena off the coast of Sri Lanka, resulting in significant casualties and highlighting a substantial loss for Iran's navy.

On Wednesday, a U.S. submarine sunk the Iranian warship IRIS Dena with a torpedo off the coast of Sri Lanka. The Iranian frigate was reportedly returning from a naval exercise in India when it was attacked, prompting a swift response from Sri Lankan authorities. Reports indicate that approximately 90 bodies have been recovered from the sea, and around 30 survivors were taken to receive medical attention.

The sinking of the IRIS Dena represents a severe setback for the Iranian naval forces, which are already under scrutiny due to various geopolitical tensions. According to Commander Sakari Soini, head of naval warfare at the National Defence University of Finland, the ship was one of the most modern vessels in Iran's fleet, commissioned in the early 2020s. The IRIS Dena, a Moudge-class frigate, was approximately 95 meters long and equipped with advanced weaponry, including Chinese-made anti-ship missiles designed for targeting surface vessels.

The incident not only highlights the volatility of maritime confrontations in the region but also underscores the growing strategic competition between the U.S. and Iran on the global stage. This attack and its consequences may further exacerbate tensions, prompting discussions among international military and political analysts about the potential for escalated conflict in the waters surrounding Iran and beyond.
