Is Donald Tusk's position in KO weakening? The behind-the-scenes fight for power

Internal elections in the Civic Coalition will determine Donald Tusk's continued leadership and the power dynamics within the party as regional leaders are elected.

On March 8, internal elections will take place within the Civic Coalition, crucially deciding whether Donald Tusk will continue to lead the party. Currently, he faces no direct opposition, but the elections for regional leaders are expected to spark significant interest and competition. The regional leaders will automatically gain seats in the Civic Coalition’s management, enhancing their influence on party decisions and the formation of candidate lists for upcoming parliamentary elections.

Witold Zembaczyński noted several intriguing contests during discussions about these elections. For instance, in Greater Poland, the Deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is challenging MP Jarosław Urbaniak, while the former head of the regional structures, Rafał Grupiński, has chosen not to run. In Lower Silesia, the battle for power includes Deputy Minister of Development and Technology Michał Jaros competing against Sejm Vice Marshal Monika Wielichowska, highlighting the strategic maneuvering occurring within the party at regional levels.

The establishment of new regional leadership will also see competitions in other areas, such as Podkarpacie, where MP Joanna F. is contending for the position left vacant by Zdzisław Gawlik. Although Tusk's position as leader of the Civic Coalition seems secure for now, these internal challenges illustrate a shifting landscape where regional powers may significantly influence the direction and strategy of the party as it approaches future parliamentary elections.
