The crisis in the Middle East has already led to 165 flights canceled between Spain and five countries in the region

The ongoing crisis in the Middle East has resulted in a significant number of flight cancellations, affecting air travel between Spain and the region.

The escalating crisis in the Middle East has led to massive disruptions in international air travel, with 165 flights from Spain to five countries in the region being canceled. Airlines such as Iberia and Air Europa have suspended operations at least until Friday, reflecting a broader precautionary strategy adopted by European airlines amid increased tensions. This situation marks the most significant crisis for the aviation sector since the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the profound impact geopolitical conflicts can have on global air travel.

The situation began escalating on February 28 when military actions were initiated by the United States and Israel against Iran, leading to retaliatory bombings by Iran on neighboring countries. As a result, the aviation industry has experienced thousands of cancellations worldwide, prompting airlines to halt operations while awaiting further guidance from civil aviation authorities, particularly from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). In the first five days of the conflict, over 80% of the planned flights originating from or destined for Spain's connections to the Middle East were affected.

According to data, globally there have been significant disruptions with a total of 12,903 out of 32,003 scheduled flights being canceled due to the upheaval in the Middle East, representing 40.3% of the total. This unprecedented number of cancellations not only underscores the ongoing volatility of the region but also raises concerns about the ability of airlines to recover from this crisis and restore normal operations, should tensions continue or escalate further in the coming days and weeks.
