After racist attack: City council supports CSU politician

The Munich city council has united behind CSU councilor Delija Balidemaj, who has faced a series of racist attacks in recent weeks.

The Munich city council has issued a joint statement from five factions expressing solidarity with CSU councilor Delija Balidemaj, who has reportedly been the victim of a cowardly series of xenophobic insults, physical assaults, and severe threats in recent weeks. The statement highlights that such hatred is not an opinion and should never serve as a means of political engagement.

At the beginning of the city council meeting, Mayor Dieter Reiter of the SPD read the joint statement, which included support from CSU/Freie Wähler, Grüne/Rosa Liste/Volt, SPD, FDP/Bayernpartei, and ÖDP/München Liste. Mayor Reiter stated, "Violence, racism, and intimidation have no place in our cosmopolitan city," emphasizing that attacking a council member based on their background or commitment attacks the democracy and the values upheld by the Munich community.

Balidemaj and the CSU had recently made public that city council members were subjected to aggression earlier in February during a political campaign. This situation highlights the urgent need for society to confront and address issues of racism and xenophobia, and it calls into question the current political climate in Germany regarding acceptance and inclusivity within political discourse.
