A Company Close to Oligarch Strnad Paid Kaliňák for 'Market Analyses'
Investigations have uncovered a financial connection between billionaire arms dealer Michal Strnad and Slovak defense minister Robert Kaliňák, involving payments for market analysis services.
A troubling link has emerged between Michal Strnad, the world's richest arms dealer, and Robert Kaliňák, Slovakia's defense minister from the Smer party, as reported by Czech journalists. The investigative piece highlights how Strnad's company, CSG, has benefited from multimillion-euro contracts awarded by Kaliňák's ministry. Central to this investigation is Kaliňák's law firm, Kallan Legal, and the Czech investment platform FinGood, where Strnad's finances were directed.
From 2021, FinGood reportedly paid Kallan Legal to provide analyses of the Slovak market and legal environment, with claims of sending annual payments totaling between €80,000 and €130,000. One fund manager described these amounts as significant for their small firm, indicating that they were heavily relying on this investment for their operations. The nature of the work, claimed to be difficult to evaluate in terms of objective added value, raises questions about the true motivation behind these payments.
The revelations suggest a concerning financial pipeline that might indicate potential corruption and favoritism in public contracts. As the investigation unfolds, it underscores the need for transparency and accountability amongst government officials and private entities engaged in defense procurement, especially in relation to extensive financial dealings that could influence national security policy in Slovakia.
