Incidents at the FATE march: Police evicted protesters in front of the Ministry of Labour
Police evicted FATE workers and various leftist unions protesting outside the Ministry of Labour in Buenos Aires on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, police in Buenos Aires intervened to evict workers from the FATE company and members of various labor and leftist groups who were protesting on Avenida Alem, right in front of the Ministry of Labour. The demonstrators had blocked the street and the Metrobus lane as a form of protest. This event took place amidst an ongoing virtual hearing convened by the government involving union representatives, occurring 15 days after mandatory conciliation measures were imposed.
The protest, organized by FATE, the SUTNA union, and the CGT, began at 11 AM outside the Ministry of Labour at Av. Leandro N. Alem 650. Key leftist figures were also present, including Myrian Bregman, Romina Del Pla, Rubén "el Pollo" Sobrero, and Eduardo Belliboni, the latter of whom reported having been assaulted by the police during the protest. Various groups were involved, including ATE, the CTA, and La Bancaria, demonstrating the broad labor support for the workers of FATE amidst ongoing labor disputes and tensions with the government.
This incident reflects the increasing tensions between labor unions and governmental authorities in Argentina, especially in light of recent economic challenges and the implementation of measures that some see as infringing on workers' rights. The involvement of various political figures and the aggressive police response highlights the contentious nature of labor politics in the country, suggesting that the struggle for workers' rights is far from over. As such, it indicates a precarious environment for negotiations between the government and labor representatives, with public demonstrations likely to continue.
