Machala implements further cuts: Cultural institutions can only heat and light their spaces
Cultural institutions in Slovakia face severe financial cuts imposed by the Ministry of Culture under Lukáš Machala's directive.
The end of the previous year brought significant challenges for the directors of cultural organizations across Slovakia. Under the direction of Lukáš Machala, the general secretary of the Ministry of Culture, there has been a push for layoffs that affected various organizations, including the Slovak National Theater. While many organizational leaders understood the need for budget consolidation, the unexpected financial cuts following the New Year left them shocked and concerned, particularly since they received no prior notice.
Starting in February, the Ministry of Culture began disbursing less money to certain organizations than what was previously agreed upon in their approved budgets, without any explanation. Many directors found this move alarming and untenable, signaling a shift to crisis mode as they are forced to cancel long-standing events and express frustration toward the ministry's lack of understanding of their operational needs. The shockwaves are being felt across the sector, leading to strong reactions from cultural leaders who challenge the ministry's approach.
As of now, the Ministry of Culture has not responded to inquiries regarding these drastic funding measures. Machala's decision to enact these cuts without prior communication has raised serious questions about the future viability of cultural institutions in Slovakia, sparking significant anxiety among those relying on government support for their activities.
