Pedro da Lua assumes the mayorship of Macapá after removal of Dr. Furlan and Mário Neto

Pedro da Lua has assumed the office of mayor in Macapá following the suspension of the previous mayor and vice-mayor due to a federal investigation.

Pedro da Lua, the president of the City Council of Macapá, took over as the acting mayor on Wednesday morning after the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil ordered the suspension of Mayor Dr. Furlan and Vice Mayor Mário Neto. This decision comes in the wake of a federal police operation known as Operation Paroxismo, which is investigating suspected fraudulent activities related to bidding processes for the construction of the Municipal General Hospital in Macapá.

Under the Supreme Court's decision, Da Lua will serve as the acting mayor for a period of 60 days. He was informed of the ruling early in the day by federal police before taking the oath of office in the city hall. The broader investigation saw 13 warrants issued, with law enforcement active in locations including Belém and Natal, targeting properties linked to the suspended mayor Dr. Furlan.

Pedro da Lua brings with him a long political career, including previous experience as an alternate federal deputy for the PSC-AP. His assumption of the mayorship indicates a significant shift in local governance due to the serious allegations against his predecessors, which could have implications for political stability and public trust in the local government as the investigation unfolds.
