Installer fell to his death - Now the cause has been revealed
An accident at the Rauma shipyard in Finland resulted in the death of an installer who fell from a height while securing a hatch.
In April 2025, a fatal accident occurred at the Rauma shipyard when an installer tragically fell while performing his job. The worker was attempting to attach a hoist to a hatch that was raised inside the construction of a vessel. During this process, the hatch unexpectedly opened, resulting in the installer falling from a significant height. This incident has raised serious concerns regarding workplace safety and the methods being employed in high-risk environments.
The investigation report from the Accident Insurance Center revealed that hazardous working methods were a significant factor in the accident. Specifically, the methods led to the breakdown of the hoisting mechanism, causing the hatch to open suddenly as the installer worked on securing it. The report indicated that the lifting operation was conducted using a method that diverged from previous protocols, which seemingly contributed to the mishap.
Additionally, the report criticized the lack of systematic management across the various companies involved in the work and contracting chain. Workers from sub-contractors responsible for the installation of the hatch performed preparatory work without the oversight of those responsible for the lifting operations, which compromised safety protocols. This incident underscores the importance of adhering to established safety practices and highlighting the need for better coordination among contractors to prevent such tragedies in the future.
