Gonet asks for more time to opine on operation, Mendonça 'regrets' and orders Vorcaro's arrest
The PGR requested more time to comment on the operation against Daniel Vorcaro, leading to the arrest ordered by Minister André Mendonça.
The Prosecutor General's Office (PGR) was informed on February 27 about the Federal Police's request for the operation that took place on March 4 against Daniel Vorcaro, the owner of Banco Master, who is suspected of corruption, money laundering, and threats. However, after 72 hours of review, Paulo Gonet, the head of the PGR, asked for more time to respond, leaving the case of Vorcaro's arrest and three others unresolved.
On Tuesday, March 3, the PGR communicated to Minister André Mendonça, the case's rapporteur in the Federal Supreme Court (STF), that the short amount of time given for the Public Ministry's response was impossible to meet. Nevertheless, Mendonça denied this request, deeming the situation urgent, and ordered the arrests and search and seizure actions to proceed. He also expressed regret over the PGR's request for an extension, citing the compelling evidence of the illicit activities involved.
This situation highlights the tension between the legal processes and the urgency presented by law enforcement in cases of alleged corruption. The swift moves made by the STF indicate a readiness to act against perceived high-profile corruption, reflecting broader concerns over accountability in the Brazilian financial sector and the judiciary’s commitment to address such serious allegations promptly.
