A child was killed in Kauniainen after being run over by a snowplow โ€“ the driver was convicted of manslaughter

A 60-year-old man was sentenced to conditional imprisonment in the case of a child who died after being run over by a snowplow in Kauniainen, Finland.

The West Uusimaa District Court has sentenced a 60-year-old man to conditional imprisonment after a tragic incident in which a 10-year-old child was killed by a snowplow in Kauniainen, near Granhult Elementary School. The child was run over when the driver was moving his snowplow with its blade raised and collided with two elementary school students on a narrow road.

The court ruled that the driver neglected his duty to stop the tractor when he encountered one child and continued driving without slowing down or attempting to avoid the child. Following this, two other children also appeared on the road. The man did not take any evasive action as he passed them, resulting in the raised plow striking one child, causing her to fall under the tractor where she tragically lost her life.

The prosecutor had sought a conviction for aggravated manslaughter, but the court determined that the driverโ€™s actions did not constitute aggravated manslaughter. Instead, he was found guilty of a lesser charge, highlighting the complexities of legal responsibility in such accidents and the importance of caution when operating heavy machinery, especially in school zones.
