mObywatel is launching in Europe this year
The Polish government is expanding its mObywatel application to be usable throughout the European Union, adding new functionalities to help Polish citizens abroad.
The Polish Ministry of Digital Affairs announced that the mObywatel application, which already serves 11 million users in Poland by providing access to 46 documents and 38 services, will soon be available across the European Union. This expansion does not result from delays in Poland but rather reflects the ongoing development of similar solutions in other EU member states. The application has seen its user base double in the past two years, demonstrating its growing significance in digital governance and citizen services in Poland.
Vice-Premier and Minister of Digital Affairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski, mentioned that a new law is in the works, which will facilitate processes such as opening bank accounts abroad for Polish citizens using mObywatel. This indicates an effort to smooth the transition and usability of the app for Polish expatriates. Despite some media reports predicting the demise of the app, Gawkowski firmly dismissed these claims, emphasizing that the new features will integrate into the existing mObywatel framework rather than creating a separate European application.
As Poland leads the way in offering digital citizen services, this move could potentially influence how other EU nations develop similar solutions, driving uniformity in digital administration across Europe. By supporting its application with legal provisions and expanding its functionalities, Poland not only seeks to empower its citizens abroad but also enhances its position as a leader in digital citizen services within the EU.
