British police have arrested three men in connection with suspicions of espionage activities on behalf of China. The arrests took place as part of an operation led by anti-terrorism officers, with one suspect apprehended in London and the others, aged 68 and 43, detained in Wales. All three were held under the National Security Act passed in 2023, which expands the circumstances under which suspects can be prosecuted for espionage.

Investigations were carried out at the residences of the arrested individuals, as well as other locations in London, Wales, and Scotland. Authorities believe the apprehensions are serious but have indicated that there is no immediate threat to the public associated with the arrests. Commander Helen Flanagan, the head of the London counter-terrorism police, emphasized this point in her statement.

The operation highlights growing concerns over espionage related to foreign powers, particularly China, amid intensified scrutiny of national security issues in the UK.
