Baby found in trash can in the interior of SP is discharged from hospital, says hospital

A baby girl who was found alive in a trash can in Guariba, São Paulo, received hospital discharge after a week of care.

A newborn baby girl, discovered last week alive and still attached to her umbilical cord in a trash can in Guariba, São Paulo, has been discharged from the hospital as of last Monday. The Santa Casa, where the child received treatment, confirmed this information to G1 on Wednesday. After her discharge, she is now under the care of the Public Ministry (MP), which will determine her future guardianship.

The baby was discovered by a resident who initially mistook her for a cat. Neighbors rushed her to Santa Casa in Guariba, where she received essential medical care immediately following her discovery. The local police have launched an investigation into the matter, revealing that the mother, a 16-year-old girl, had concealed her pregnancy from her family and, in a distressing act, forced her own delivery.

Authorities have classified the incident as abandonment of a minor, and the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the abandonment is ongoing. Although the report sought remarks from the MP regarding the case, there was no response by the latest update. This situation raises significant concerns regarding maternal support and the wellbeing of vulnerable children in Brazil, highlighting the need for stronger community and governmental interventions to prevent such occurrences in the future.
