After more than 30 years, artist Andris Breže's installation 'Envelope' returns to the exhibition hall
Andris Breže's installation 'Envelope' is back on display after over 30 years at the Soros Contemporary Art Centre until April 5.
Andris Breže's artistic installation 'Envelope' is being exhibited once again at the Soros Contemporary Art Centre, more than thirty years after its initial presentation. Originally unveiled in 1994, 'Envelope' was featured in the annual exhibition 'State' and represented a distinct moment in the art world, especially considering that it was created before the advent of social media and modern digital technologies. Breže reflects on the absence of contemporary documentation practices at the time, noting that only limited photographic records exist from that period, dependent on the work of photographers present during the early 1990s.
The return of 'Envelope' serves not merely as a revival of a forgotten installation but as an opportunity to engage with the context of the early 1990s in Latvia. Art historian Santa Hirša emphasizes the importance of exploring printed media from that era to better understand the social and cultural conditions that viewed art as a non-material phenomenon. This reflection enriches the contemporary understanding of the piece and its significance within both the historical and modern artistic landscape.
This exhibition is significant not just for its artistic value, but also for its cultural implications, as it represents a reconnection with Latvia's artistic heritage after the fall of the Soviet Union. By revisiting 'Envelope', audiences are encouraged to reflect on the evolution of art and society since the 1990s and the ongoing dialogue between past and present in contemporary art.Virtual engagement with artworks and historical contexts adds depth to the appreciation of both the installation and the artistic legacy it embodies.
