The British government has implemented an unprecedented measure described as an "emergency brake" on student visas for citizens from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan, reflecting increasing political and societal pressures regarding immigration policies. The Home Office has cited a staggering 470% rise in asylum applications from holders of student visas between 2021 and 2025 as the trigger for this decision.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized that while the UK remains committed to providing a safe haven for those fleeing war and persecution, it is crucial that the visa system is not exploited. She stated that the suspension of these student visas is a necessary step to safeguard the integrity of the nation's asylum system.
