Lawyer claims to have been assaulted and handcuffed by police at a DF police station; see VIDEO

A lawyer was reportedly assaulted and handcuffed by police while attempting to assist a client at a police station in Samambaia, Brazil.

The Brazilian Bar Association of the Federal District (OAB-DF) reported that a lawyer, Cláudio Martins Lourenço, was assaulted and handcuffed by police at the 26th Police Station in Samambaia. The incident, which allegedly occurred on the night of Monday, October 2, was recorded by witnesses, raising concerns over the treatment of legal professionals in the police system. Witnesses claimed that the lawyer was present to assist a client who had reported being assaulted in the station, but was himself met with aggression from police officials.

Following the incident, the OAB met with the Governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha, the Attorney General, Georges Seigneur, and other authorities to address the situation. Consequently, Governor Rocha ordered an investigation into the events by the Internal Affairs of the Civil Police. The lawyer's actions are disputed by the police, who claimed he did not comply with orders to leave the station due to safety concerns while there was a situation involving pepper spray being used on another detainee.

This incident has highlighted ongoing tensions between legal professionals and police, as well as raising questions about the treatment of individuals in custody and the protection afforded to those seeking to defend them. The outcome of the investigation, which is expected to shed light on the alleged police misconduct, is being closely monitored by human rights advocates and legal experts alike.
