G. Kotzias (Xclusiv Shipbrokers): We are in uncharted waters in shipping, energy, and the movement of goods – Heroes are seafarers

Ioannis Kotzias warns that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is creating unprecedented conditions in shipping, energy, and global trade.

In a recent interview on 'N' television, Ioannis Kotzias, founder of Xclusiv Shipbrokers and president of the Ship Brokers Association, expressed deep concerns over the current state of shipping, energy, and international trade. He emphasized that the intensity of the conflict in the Middle East is alarming, but the real concern lies in its potential duration. Kotzias pointed out that the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing war has created 'uncharted waters' for these sectors, raising the possibility of economic recession rather than growth.

Kotzias detailed the severe impact of the geopolitical crisis on the charter market, particularly highlighting the drastic increase in freight rates for Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), which transport around 300,000 tons of crude oil. He reported that, as of February 28, daily freight rates soared to approximately $400,000, reaching historical levels due to the disruptions in supply chains associated with the conflict. This surge indicates significant market volatility, which could have broader implications for global oil supply and pricing.

Furthermore, Kotzias called the seafarers 'heroes' in this turbulent time, acknowledging their critical role in ensuring the continuity of goods transport amid such challenges. The possibility of a prolonged conflict raises questions about the future stability of energy supplies and international trade routes, underscoring the urgent need for stakeholders in the shipping and energy sectors to adapt to the rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
