Friendship Encountered in Okinawa
A student from South Korea recounts their visit to Okinawa, engaging with local students and reflecting on cooperation and empathy during shared activities.
From February 3 to 11, a student from Seongshin Women's University participated in the JENESYS 2025 program, visiting Okinawa as part of a Japan-South Korea youth exchange initiative. The trip included learning about Okinawa's history and culture, touring peace education sites, and interacting with locals of various ages. A standout experience for the student was the time spent with peers from the Urakami High School, which highlighted the values of cooperation and empathy. During the exchange, pairs of students from the visiting group and Urakami High School spent half a day together attending classes and recreational activities. The warm welcome was striking, with over a thousand students applauding and cheering upon their entry into the school. However, the experience also confronted the visitor with practical challenges, including the absence of elevators in the school building, which required navigating multiple flights of stairs. When the visitor felt hesitant to ask for assistance from local female students, their peer extended a helping hand, offering to carry them up and down the stairs, showcasing the spirit of cooperation. The student reflected on the discomfort of needing physical help from peers, battling feelings of guilt and insecurity. They had previously participated in a relay race in elementary school and felt the burden of disappointing classmates. While there was encouragement to engage only in activities that required minimal assistance, all peers refused, demonstrating a genuine desire for full participation. Ultimately, the gathering fostered an understanding that community support can dismantle barriers, allowing for meaningful exchanges and reinforcing friendship across cultures.
