Distance Between the Former Unification Church and Politics, Remaining Questions: Expert Says 'Government Shows No Signs of Reflection'

The Tokyo High Court has ordered the dissolution of the Unification Church, raising questions about political ties and the ongoing issues related to the religious group.

On April 4, the Tokyo High Court issued a decision to dissolve the World Peace Unification Family Association, commonly known as the former Unification Church, based on the Religious Corporations Act, in light of allegations concerning high-value donation solicitations. While the court's ruling is seen as warranted following a thorough examination of human rights violations arising after the church's compliance declaration in 2009, experts caution that the case is far from resolved. Even if dissolved as a religious corporation, many affiliated organizations will continue their activities, highlighting the lack of administrative and civil support for victims, including second-generation members, and the failure to clarify the root causes of the widespread harms caused by the organization.
