Couple Celebrates Their Wedding Anniversary, Then the Woman Disappears - Husband Sentenced to Years in Prison for Murder

A man from Luumäki, Finland, has been sentenced to over ten years in prison for the murder of his wife, who was reported missing after the couple's anniversary celebration.

A middle-aged man from Luumäki, South Karelia, Vitaly Kelka, has been sentenced to ten years and ten months of imprisonment for the murder and violation of the peace of the grave of his wife. Both the perpetrator and the victim were born in the Soviet Union and were Russian citizens who arrived in Finland in the early 2000s. The troubling case began when the victim was reported missing in August 2025, with her daughter contacting the police after losing daily communication with her mother.

After an extensive search, the victim's body was discovered buried in the woods in Luumäki at the end of October, following a hunter's report of finding something suspicious. Investigations revealed that the woman had been severely damaged, but the exact circumstances of her death remained unclear. Initially, she was treated as a missing person until her remains were found, which changed the focus of the investigation to the husband, who ultimately was charged with her murder.

The court's rulings highlight the violence that can exist in domestic relationships, emphasizing the need for awareness and preventative measures against domestic violence. This case not only sheds light on the tragic fate of a woman who celebrated an anniversary with her husband but also stresses the ongoing challenges of monitoring domestic situations, especially among immigrant communities, who may face additional barriers in seeking help or ensuring their safety.
