Federal government boosts scrutiny of businesses claiming to be Indigenous-owned
The Canadian federal government is tightening its enforcement against businesses falsely claiming to be Indigenous-owned to ensure fair access to government contracts.
The Canadian federal government, through Indigenous Services Canada, is taking significant steps to combat the practice of businesses improperly claiming Indigenous ownership to gain access to federal contracts. According to a review by Global News, Mandy Gull-Masty, the minister in charge of the Procurement Strategy for Indigenous Business (PSIB), conveyed in a recent letter to the House of Commons that the department is enhancing its verification processes. This will help ensure that only legitimately Indigenous-owned businesses are able to benefit from the advantages accorded by the government's Indigenous Business Directory (IBD).
In light of this revelation, the government is setting forth strict consequences for those who misrepresent their status. Measures include removal from the Indigenous Business Directory, which would prevent access to federal contracts and, in some cases, could lead to legal referrals. Gull-Masty emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity within the directory and stated that the department is ramping up training efforts and refining verification protocols for staff. This initiative not only aims to protect Indigenous businesses but also seeks to foster a fair contracting environment.
This shift in policy underscores the government's commitment to ensuring that Indigenous economy is supported and that legitimate businesses are not undermined by fraudulent claims. Given the billions of dollars involved in federal contracts, the implications of these measures are substantial. They could potentially reshape the landscape of government contracting in Canada, fostering greater accountability and transparency for Indigenous-owned enterprises, while also providing a safeguard against exploitation of the system by non-Indigenous businesses claiming false identity in pursuit of profit.
