The article discusses the high level of informality in Mexico's economy, arguing that it should not be seen as the primary cause of the country's stagnant productivity.
The article addresses the significant role of informality in Mexico's economic landscape, noting statistics from INEGI which reveal that as of January 2026, 54.9% of the employed population was engaged in informal work without access to social security or legal labor benefits. In addition, the informal economy constituted 25.4% of the GDP in 2024. While many attribute the country's low productivity to the prevalence of informal labor, this perspective is challenged in the article.
