Record amount of gas transferred from Poland to Lithuania recorded in February
In February, Lithuania witnessed a record transfer of gas from Poland, transporting 1.38 TWh through the GIPL pipeline.
The month of February 2023 saw a significant increase in gas transfers from Poland to Lithuania, where a record 1.38 TWh of gas was transported via the GIPL pipeline. This surge was attributed to elevated pricing in the region which made it financially viable to transport gas from other European countries despite transportation costs. The manager of Amber Grid, Nemunas Biknius, noted that at the beginning of the month, price differentials reached several tens of euros per megawatt-hour, reflecting a robust demand for gas imports.
The bulk of the gas flow into Lithuania was directed towards Finland, where gas prices were notably high, around 70 euros per megawatt-hour at the start of February. Additionally, in the same period, Lithuania exported 0.29 TWh of gas towards Poland through the GIPL pipeline. The overall natural gas consumption in Lithuania for February amounted to 2.5 TWh, indicating a substantial reliance on imported gas to meet domestic demands.
Biknius further emphasized the notable record of gas flows not only to Finland but also towards Latvia, which is unusual for the winter season, where such high levels of gas transportation are not typical. This trend suggests a shift in market dynamics, pointing towards a heightened interdependence between the gas markets of Lithuania and its neighboring countries, as well as broader implications for energy security in the region.
