Russia accuses Ukraine of attacking tanker ship

Russia has accused Ukraine of being behind a drone attack on a tanker ship off the coast of Libya, which sank shortly after the incident.

Russia has alleged that Ukraine was responsible for a drone strike on the Arctic Metagaz tanker ship, which sank off the coast of Libya on Tuesday. According to the Russian Ministry of Transport, the ship was struck by a Ukrainian sea drone early in the morning. Images circulated by various media outlets showed a significant hole in the ship's side just before it sank, though Ukraine has not confirmed involvement in the attack.

The alleged drone attack led to an explosive fire that resulted in the sinking of the tanker, which had a crew of 30, all reportedly Russian nationals. Fortunately, the crew managed to escape in lifeboats and were rescued by the Libyan coast guard. The Arctic Metagaz was reportedly part of Russia's so-called shadow fleet, which transports Russian oil and gas in defiance of Western sanctions, highlighting the geopolitical significance of the incident in the context of ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

Earlier reports indicate that the tanker had left Murmansk after being loaded with liquefied natural gas on February 18 and was en route to the Beihai terminal in China at the time of the attack. The incident raises concerns over maritime security and the potential for escalation in hostilities in the region, as both Ukraine and Russia continue to navigate their fraught relationship amidst the backdrop of international sanctions and military conflict.
