Ostapenko's next opponent will be Volineca or Šramkova
Latvian tennis player Jelena Ostapenko will face either American Katie Volynets or Slovak Rebecca Šramkova in her first match at the Indian Wells 'WTA 1000' tournament.
Jelena Ostapenko, ranked 26th in the WTA, is set to compete in the Indian Wells 'WTA 1000' tournament where she will play her first match against either the American Katie Volynets or the Slovak Rebecca Šramkova. The matchups were determined during a draw held on Monday. Ostapenko is entering the tournament as a seeded player and has a bye in the first round, meaning her competition will begin in the second round against one of potential opponents. Volynets is currently ranked 98th in the WTA standings, while Šramkova is listed at 118th. Ostapenko has not faced Volynets before; however, she has competed against Šramkova five times, winning four of those encounters, including their most recent match in the first round of the Australian Open earlier this year, where Ostapenko triumphed with a score of 6-4, 6-4. The Indian Wells tournament, played on hard courts, marks an important event in Ostapenko's season. Her best performance at this tournament came in 2021, when she reached the semifinals. In the last two years, however, she has been eliminated in the second round, and fans will be eager to see if she can improve her results this year and advance further into the tournament.
