Burning Russian Gas Ship Sank in the Mediterranean
A Russian gas tanker sank in the Mediterranean following explosions, prompting accusations from Russia towards Ukraine for an alleged attack.
A Russian tanker, named Arctic Metagaz, has sunk in the Mediterranean after experiencing severe explosions. The vessel, which was transporting liquefied fossil gas and measuring over 270 meters in length, was reported to be on fire while navigating waters between Malta and Libya. Initial reports indicated that the crew had issued a distress call due to 'sudden explosions', highlighting the ship's perilous situation as it struggled to stay afloat.
Russian officials have blamed Ukraine for allegedly attacking the ship using unmanned vehicles from the Libyan coast, accusations that are difficult to confirm at this early stage. They characterized such an attack as a serious violation. Meanwhile, Libyan authorities corroborated the ship's distress signals following the explosions, showcasing the complex geopolitical tensions surrounding maritime activities in the Mediterranean region amid ongoing hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.
Fortunately, the ship's crew, composed of 30 Russian citizens, was reportedly rescued and is alive, as confirmed by Maltese officials who found them in a lifeboat. This incident underscores the risks associated with maritime operations in conflict zones, as well as the potential for international escalations stemming from such events, particularly in waters that are strategically important in the context of the current geopolitical climate.
