The Teachers' Union Announces: Negotiations in Alytus with Local Authorities Have Failed
Negotiations between the teachers' union and the local government in Alytus collapsed, resulting in teachers experiencing psychological pressure and manipulation during talks.
The teachers' union in Alytus has declared the failure of negotiations with the local government, highlighting significant issues regarding the treatment and safety of teachers. Initially, there were hopes for meaningful dialogue and compromise; however, the reality devolved into a scene of pressure, manipulation, and delaying tactics. Instead of addressing vital issues such as teachers' safety, the mayor attempted to divert attention by proposing irrelevant activities while exerting psychological pressure on teachers to accept agreements without adequate deliberation.
The document from the union criticized the mayor’s actions in defending the interim director, Aleksandras Kirilovas, who allegedly degraded some of the best teachers in Lithuania. It is indicated that the mayor ignored calls from the Minister of Education, Science, and Sports, Raminta Popovienė, to remove Kirilovas from his position and appoint a temporary administrator. This exemplifies a broader issue of political shielding and a lack of accountability in the face of pressing educational challenges.
Teachers are currently under immense stress as critical assessments are approaching, and their grievances remain unresolved. The strong criticism aimed at the mayor underscores the urgency of the situation and the necessity for responsible governance that prioritizes educational quality and teacher welfare. With the academic pressures mounting, this conflict reflects deeper systemic issues within the local education administration that need addressing.
