Earthquake in Catania, strong tremor of magnitude 4.5
A strong earthquake of magnitude 4.5 was felt in Catania and surrounding areas, with reports indicating no significant damage or injuries.
A strong earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale struck Catania shortly after 7:05 AM. The tremor was distinctly felt by residents in various towns around Mount Etna, including Augusta and Messina, indicating a wide geographical impact. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) has published an automatic location of the earthquake, which is currently under further verification, pinpointing the epicenter on Etna, northwest of Ragalna, at a depth of approximately 3.8 kilometers.
Interestingly, earlier in the morning at 5:12 AM, another much lighter earthquake of magnitude 2.3 was recorded off the northeastern coast of Sicily, occurring at a depth of 126 kilometers in the sea. While this smaller tremor is not directly related to the 4.5 magnitude quake, it may indicate increased seismic activity in the region, which is geologically active due to its proximity to Mount Etna, one of Europe’s most active volcanoes.
No reports have emerged of damages to property or casualties resulting from the 4.5 magnitude earthquake so far, however, the situation remains ongoing with updates expected as authorities conduct further assessments. Awareness and preparedness in earthquake-prone areas like this are crucial for public safety, and regular monitoring by geological institutions serves to keep the public informed about seismic events.
