President Yoon: "If you mess with Koreans, you will face ruin"... Requests temporary extradition of 'Telegram drug king' from the Philippines
President Yoon Suk-yeol emphasizes the commitment to protect Koreans abroad and seeks cooperation from the Philippines to extradite a notorious drug criminal.
During a meeting with overseas Koreans in the Philippines, President Yoon Suk-yeol stated that crimes against Koreans are declining as a result of intensified policing and budget allocation directed towards these issues. He emphasized that with a 22% reduction in scam crimes involving Koreans, there is a significant commitment from the South Korean government to address crime targeting its citizens while fostering cooperation with the Philippine authorities. His comments received applause from attendees, signifying their support for the efforts being made to enhance safety for Koreans abroad.
Additionally, President Yoon revealed that he requested the temporary extradition of a known drug kingpin, Park Wang-yeol, from Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Park is currently serving time in a Philippine prison but allegedly continues to orchestrate drug exports to Korea from behind bars. The request for extradition stems from the need for Park to face trial in South Korea, especially considering his involvement in previous serious crimes, including the notorious murder of three Koreans in the Philippines in 2016.
Yoon also touched upon the unresolved case of Ji Ik-joo, a South Korean businessman murdered by local police in the Philippines, urging for the capture of the remaining suspects involved. He highlighted the efforts being made by South Korean authorities, cooperating with Filipino counterparts to ensure justice in these heinous cases. As part of this collaboration, a 'Korean Desk' has been established in the Philippines to specifically assist Korean victims and enhance the options available for mitigating risks to Korean expatriates living in the country.
