European countries begin flights to evacuate their citizens from the Middle East

Several European nations are organizing flights to evacuate their citizens amid escalating conflict in the Middle East.

As tensions rise in the Middle East, several European countries have initiated evacuation flights for their citizens. Spain's Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, announced that 175 Spanish nationals have boarded a planned flight from Abu Dhabi to Madrid. These repatriation efforts come in the wake of intensified military actions, with the United States and Israel bombing Iran, prompting retaliatory attacks from Iran against Israel and Gulf states. The violence has led to the suspension of commercial aviation in many parts of the region.

Current estimates from Madrid indicate that approximately 30,000 Spanish citizens are located in the conflict zone, and new flights are being planned to expedite their departure, particularly from the United Arab Emirates, which is home to around 13,000 Spanish nationals. Albares noted the challenging situation for more than 150 Spanish citizens still in Iran, highlighting the complexities and dangers faced in current operations.

Similarly, the UK Foreign Secretary Iveta Kūpere has announced government plans to facilitate the evacuation of British nationals, emphasizing the international scope of this crisis. The developments are critical not only for the safety of the civilians involved but also reflect the broader geopolitical ramifications of the escalating conflict in the region affecting various nationalities and their governments' responses.
