Nigeria ports record 24.8% cargo growth – Report

Nigeria's maritime sector has marked a significant 24.8% increase in cargo throughput, highlighting the country's growing role in global trade.

According to the 2025 Operational Performance Report released by the Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigeria's maritime sector has experienced a historic surge in activity, with total cargo throughput rising by 24.8% from about 103.6 million metric tonnes in 2024 to over 129.3 million metric tonnes in 2025. This growth is the most significant annual increase in Nigeria's maritime history, as stated by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, emphasizing that this milestone strengthens Nigeria's competitive position in both regional and global trade.

The report noted that although imports continued to dominate the overall cargo traffic, there has been a noteworthy increase in outward trade, with exports making up 39% of the total cargo throughput. Inward traffic constituted 59.2%, along with a recognized increase in transhipment cargo, which is indicative of developing port facilities and improved operational efficiency. The upward trend showcases Nigeria’s evolving export footprint and the potential for sustaining economic growth through enhanced maritime activities.

The implications of such growth are far-reaching as they not only bolster Nigeria’s status in the regional trade landscape but also attract foreign investments and generate job opportunities within the maritime sector. The increasing cargo throughput reflects a positive trajectory for the Nigerian economy and could enhance bilateral and multilateral trade relations with other countries, where efficient port management plays a key role in facilitating smooth trade operations.
