More than 6,000 rental fraud victim homes acquired, recognition of 37,000 victims
The Korea Land and Housing Corporation has acquired over 6,000 homes affected by rental fraud, with a total of 37,000 victims recognized under the rental fraud victim law.
The Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) has reported acquiring more than 6,000 homes affected by rental fraud, highlighting a significant issue in South Korea's housing market. As of February 24, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport disclosed that LH had inaugurated a 'fast-track' process to streamline the purchase of fraud-affected properties, a need underscored by the rise in victims seeking assistance. The government has pledged to enhance cooperation with local courts to ensure a smooth acquisition of properties and aid stabilizing housing for affected individuals.
Since the amended rental fraud victim law came into effect in November of last year, the support for victims has expanded notably. 37,000 individuals have been recognized as victims, with 3,950 of them affirmed in just one month of February during the committees' meetings. These recognized victims are eligible for various supports, including housing, financial assistance, and legal proceedings related to their cases. Meanwhile, those who only partially meet the criteria may miss out on certain protections afforded by the law.
The government continues to emphasize its commitment to aid victims through the streamlined processes while encouraging those affected to apply for recognition in their local administrative offices. The complex nature of this crisis underlines the pressing need for effective policy responses and infrastructure to protect tenants in South Korea, where the rental market can be particularly vulnerable to fraudulent practices.
