50% of children and adolescents will be overweight in Brazil by 2040, says study

A recent study estimates that by 2040, 50% of Brazilian children and adolescents will be overweight, a sharp increase from the current 38%.

A report released by the World Obesity Federation indicates that approximately 38% of Brazilian children and adolescents aged 5 to 19 currently suffer from overweight or obesity. This figure represents about 17 million young individuals, with around 7 million classified as obese, which is significantly higher than the global average projected at 20.7% for 2025. The report defines overweight and obesity based on Body Mass Index (BMI) thresholds set by the World Health Organization (WHO), categorizing overweight as one level above the expected average for age and sex, and obesity as two levels above that.

The study forecasts a concerning trend, projecting that Brazil will experience a drastic increase in rates of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents, potentially reaching 50% by 2040. Childhood obesity rates are expected to rise from 17% in 2025 to 24% in 2040. This alarming trend poses significant health risks for future generations, indicating a need for urgent public health responses to mitigate the growing obesity crisis.

The findings underline the importance of addressing the issue not only at a healthcare level but also through public policy, lifestyle changes, and education. With Brazil’s statistics substantially exceeding global averages, there is a pressing necessity for comprehensive strategies to tackle childhood obesity, which could include promoting healthier food choices, increasing physical activity, and implementing educational campaigns targeting families and communities.
