Taxis older than 10 years may circulate until 2030 in Rio; see transition schedule
Rio de Janeiro has enacted a decree allowing taxis older than ten years to operate until 2030, introducing a phased transition schedule for older vehicles.
The city of Rio de Janeiro has issued a new decree that sets a transitional rule regarding the operational age limit for taxis. This decision permits taxis manufactured over ten years ago to continue their operations until 2030, as per a gradual phase-out plan. The approach aims to soften the financial impact on the taxi industry, allowing older vehicles to remain in service for a few additional years while a structured timeline is established for their eventual removal from circulation.
According to the newly published guidelines, taxis produced between 2010 and 2014 can continue operating until 2030, but they will need to adhere to a defined exit schedule. This phased approach is designed to promote a smooth transition, enabling taxi drivers to plan for the replacement of their vehicles over a specified timeline. Newer vehicles, specifically those manufactured from 2015 onward, are now permitted to enter the taxi fleet until December 31, 2026, subject to authorization from the Municipal Transport Secretary.
The detailed schedule outlines that vehicles manufactured in 2015 can operate until 2031, while taxis from 2016 and 2017 can continue until 2032. This strategy reflects an attempt by the Rio de Janeiro government to balance modernizing its taxi fleet with the financial viability of current taxi operators. By extending the operational lifespan of older taxis, the city aims to mitigate the economic burden that a sudden fleet turnover could impose on taxi drivers and owners, thereby ensuring a more gradual shift to a newer vehicle lineup.
