Good news for New York: the DMV recovered more than 13.6 million dollars in stolen cars and services
The New York DMV has successfully recovered over 13.6 million dollars in stolen vehicles and services in 2025, reflecting an increase from the previous year.
In light of growing concerns regarding vehicle theft and rising auto insurance costs, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has helped consumers recover over 13.6 million dollars in 2025 from stolen cars, parts, titles, and reimbursements for irregular services. This figure represents a significant increase compared to the 11 million dollars that were recovered in 2024.
The official statement indicated that during this period, the DMV was able to recover 384 stolen vehicles valued at over 10.4 million dollars, along with 18 stolen parts valued at 76,778 dollars. New York state authorities attribute these accomplishments to new initiatives aimed at combating organized theft and fraud networks that affect vehicle buyers and owners. This proactive approach not only helps individuals recapture their losses but also serves as a deterrent to future criminal activities in the auto industry.
The recovery of such a substantial amount reflects the ongoing efforts of the state to protect consumers and minimize the financial impacts of theft on car owners. The measures taken by the DMV, including increased monitoring and collaboration with law enforcement, underscore the state's commitment to addressing issues surrounding vehicle security, ultimately aiming to enhance public confidence in the automotive marketplace.
