Without currency restrictions, Argentines are increasingly using crypto but most do not know it
In Argentina, the usage of cryptocurrencies is on the rise with active monthly users growing despite general public unawareness about their activities.
A recent report titled 'State of the Crypto Industry 2025' from Lemon, a leading virtual wallet in Argentina, highlights a significant increase in cryptocurrency use among Argentines. Despite Google searches for 'crypto' dropping as a trend, Argentina now has four times as many active monthly cryptocurrency users compared to the booming period of 2021. The growth appears to be driven by practical applications—many Argentines are utilizing cryptocurrencies to pay bills, receive freelance payments, and conduct transactions outside conventional banking hours, often using USDT (Tether) without recognizing it as cryptocurrency.
In 2025, Argentina achieved a landmark with 5.4 million downloads of crypto applications, marking the highest level in the last four years. Monthly active users increased by 20% compared to 2024, indicating a burgeoning interest in cryptocurrency beyond mere speculation. The study shows that, unlike previous booms driven by investment excitement, today's growth is more about functionality in everyday economic activities, as many users turned to crypto to navigate economic uncertainties and regulatory limitations on currency use in the country.
Despite the impressive statistics, a significant portion of the Argentine population remains unaware that they are engaging with cryptocurrency. The reliance on digital solutions for financial transactions illustrates a shift in the Argentine economy, reflecting a population adapting to the informal and sometimes precarious nature of their currency policies. This trend suggests a growing integration of cryptocurrencies into everyday life in Argentina, potentially reshaping attitudes towards digital finance in the long term.
