Area of forest equivalent to 49 football fields illegally deforested in the interior of the Amazon
An area of forest in Apuí, Amazonas, equivalent to 49 football fields, has been embargoed due to illegal deforestation activities as part of an environmental enforcement operation.
In Apuí, a city located in the southern region of the Amazonas state in Brazil, an environmental enforcement action led to the embargo of a deforested area measuring 48.81 hectares, which is roughly equivalent to 49 football fields. This operation, known as Operação Tamoiotatá, involves the permanent task force aimed at combating illegal deforestation practices in Amazonas. The inspection was carried out along the Coruja road, covering a distance of 45 kilometers, revealing ongoing illegal activities despite previous embargoes on the land.
The enforcement agents identified ongoing agricultural practices and cattle farming in a designated area, which had previously been subject to environmental restrictions. As a result of the violations found during the inspection, fines totaling approximately R$ 465,000 were imposed, alongside two infractions and an official embargo order. This measure effectively prohibits any activities in the affected zone until the environmental issues are resolved according to federal law, highlighting the serious consequences for non-compliance.
The individual responsible for the deforestation, whose identity remains undisclosed, has been fined and is now under pressure to respond within a 20-day period to the environmental authorities. This incident underscores the continuing challenges faced in enforcing environmental laws in Brazil, particularly in regions like Amazonas, where illegal deforestation poses significant threats to biodiversity and the fight against climate change.
