2 people dead in Calgary from possible CO poisoning

Two people in Calgary have died, likely from carbon monoxide poisoning in a detached garage.

Calgary police have reported the deaths of two individuals following an incident in the northeast community of Rundle. Authorities were alerted early Tuesday morning to two people in medical distress. Upon arrival, officers found the victims in a detached garage, where emergency responders attempted resuscitation efforts. Despite these efforts, one person was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was transported to a hospital, where they also died shortly thereafter.

Firefighters from the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) detected dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide, registering at 300 parts per million inside the garage. Although the CFD could not definitively state that carbon monoxide poisoning was the cause of death, police have indicated that the situation appears to be non-criminal in nature, suggesting that there were no signs of foul play involved. Carbon monoxide is a hazardous gas that poses serious health risks, leading to significant concerns about safety in residential spaces.

This tragic incident underscores the dangers of carbon monoxide exposure, a threat often overlooked due to the gas's lack of odor and color. Health Canada classifies carbon monoxide as a serious hazard, highlighting the importance of safety measures such as carbon monoxide detectors in homes. As investigations continue, community awareness around the dangers of carbon monoxide and the necessary precautions to avoid such tragedies is crucial for public safety.
