Reps move to recover $7bn from foreign airlines

The Nigerian House of Representatives is initiating efforts to reclaim over $7 billion owed to the Federation Account by foreign airlines operating in the country.

The House of Representatives in Nigeria has taken steps to recover an estimated $7 billion allegedly owed to the Federation Account by various foreign airlines that have been operating in the country. Abiodun Faleke, the Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, highlighted this initiative during a recent review meeting focused on the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria's revenue monitoring for 2023 to 2025. This recovery effort is seen as critical given the mounting debts owed by both foreign and domestic carriers, raising concerns about the financial health of the airline operating environment in Nigeria.

During the meeting, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), revealed that in 2023, airline operators owed the authority a total of 25.86 billion NGN. FAAN was able to recover approximately 8.08 billion NGN, which accounts for 31.25% of the total debt. However, this leaves a significant outstanding balance of 17.78 billion NGN that still needs to be addressed. Kuku's report underscores the challenge of collecting debts from airlines, an issue that could potentially impact airport operations and national revenue generation.

As the government aims to bolster its financial resources, these recovery efforts could lead to a re-evaluation of the regulatory framework governing foreign airline operations in Nigeria. The success of this initiative is particularly important as it could set a precedent for how the aviation sector is managed in terms of financial compliance, thereby affecting future investments and operational standards within the industry.
