Convicted of killing mother and 3 daughters in Sorriso (MT) requests permission from the Justice to study and work in prison

Gilberto Rodrigues dos Anjos, convicted of murdering a mother and her three daughters, requested permission to study and work while imprisoned, but his request was denied by the judge.

Gilberto Rodrigues dos Anjos, a 34-year-old man convicted of the brutal murder and rape of a mother and her three daughters in Sorriso, Mato Grosso, in November 2023, has sought permission from the judiciary to engage in educational and work activities while incarcerated in the Penitenciária Central do Estado (PCE) in Cuiabá. However, his request was denied by Judge Geraldo Fernandes Fidelis Neto. The judge clarified that the decision regarding inmates' participation in educational and labor programs falls under the jurisdiction of the penitentiary administration and not the judiciary.

In his ruling, published on the 1st, Judge Fidelis Neto noted that while the Brazilian Penal Execution Law guarantees prisoners the right to work and educational assistance, the actual implementation of these rights depends on the infrastructure of the prison facility and individual assessments of inmates. These assessments take into account the detainee's profile, capabilities, and most importantly, safety considerations, which are responsibilities of both the prison management and psychosocial teams.

Thus, the denial of Anjos' request underscores the legal complexities surrounding prisoner rehabilitation and the limitations of resources available in Brazilian correctional facilities. It also reflects ongoing debates within the criminal justice system about how to balance the rights of incarcerated individuals with societal concerns over safety and justice, particularly in cases involving severe crimes like those committed by Anjos.
