Threatened wild cat spotted in Três Picos State Park, RJ

A threatened wild cat species, Leopardus guttulus, has been recorded in Três Picos State Park in Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro, highlighting conservation efforts in the region.

The Leopardus guttulus, a wild cat species classified as threatened, has been documented in Três Picos State Park, located in Nova Friburgo in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro. This sighting was made possible through the installation of camera traps as part of the Aventura Animal project led by environmentalist Juran Santos, in collaboration with the State Institute of the Environment (INEA). Such recordings emphasize the presence of this species in the park and underscore the ongoing monitoring efforts of the local wildlife.

Currently, the park is home to an estimated eight to nine individual wild cats, both male and female, which are being closely monitored. According to INEA, these records are crucial for the conservation of the Leopardus guttulus and highlight the importance of preserving the Atlantic Forest. The monitoring efforts help to assess the viability of the species in this habitat and reinforce the need for protective measures in areas where this cat resides.

The camera traps are set up in secure locations within the park and remain stationary for extended periods, increasing the likelihood of capturing images of local wildlife. The ongoing presence of the wild cat in the area suggests that Três Picos State Park is providing a suitable and safe environment for the species, indicating positive outcomes for conservation efforts in the region.
