National Assembly implements new voting projection modality in the plenary
The National Assembly of Ecuador will now display the names of assembly members alongside their votes to enhance transparency.
The President of the National Assembly, Niels Olsen, has announced a new voting projection modality that will take effect on March 3, 2026. This innovative system aims to enhance the transparency of legislative proceedings by allowing citizens to see the names of assembly members as they cast their votes. Olsen emphasized that this change is significant as it replaces the previous system that only displayed the seat numbers of the representatives, preventing the public from identifying how their elected officials voted.
During the 73rd session of the plenary, Olsen expressed the importance of this initiative, stating that from now on, Ecuadorians will be able to immediately know the voting decisions of their representatives by name. The initiative is part of a broader effort to increase accountability in government and allow citizens to engage more actively in the democratic process. The systems will be installed in the assembly chamber and will show names during votes, providing a clear and direct line of sight into the democratic process.
The implementation of this voting projection system will use three large screens in the assembly, and will display the names of the votes cast as either in favor, against, abstention, or invalid. It will also reveal which legislators are absent during voting, further contributing to the transparency of legislative operations. This step forward is expected to foster greater public trust in Ecuador's democratic institutions by making the voting process more visible and accessible to the electorate.
