Canadian troops in Middle East ‘are all fine’ amid Iran war, McGuinty says
Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty reports that troops in the Middle East are safe amidst ongoing conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty reassured the public that Canadian military personnel stationed in the Middle East are safe and 'out of harm’s way' as the conflict escalates with recent missile strikes conducted by the U.S. and Israel against Iran. During a press conference while on an official visit to Sydney, Australia, McGuinty refrained from providing specific numbers of Canadian troops in the region, but emphasized that their well-being is being closely monitored amidst rising tensions.
He further commented on the geopolitical landscape by describing the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as a 'positive development,' labeling him a significant source of destabilization in the region for many years. This statement aligns with the Canadian government’s cautious support of the U.S. and Israeli military actions, highlighting a shared view that the leadership of Khamenei was detrimental not only to Iran but to regional stability.
Despite endorsing the military actions against Iran, PM Mark Carney and McGuinty affirmed that Canada would not engage in the conflict, stating that the Canadian Armed Forces were neither involved in the operational planning nor execution of the strikes. This positions Canada as an observer in the ongoing conflict while still maintaining a posture of concern for the safety of its personnel involved in international defense operations.
